Japanese Roof Iris gets its name from its presence on thatched roofs in Japan. Iris tectorum has large violet flowers that are beautifully flecked with darker purple spots. They appear just above the wide somewhat floppy green leaves in early summer. Japanese Roof Iris spreads to make a wide patch eventually, and does best with adequate moisture but good drainage. It is the Asian version of Iris cristata, but much bigger. This is an excellent plant for green roofs that get adequate moisture, and a very difficult plant to find in the Trade.   2024 PHS Gold Medal Plant.
