Fargesia rufa Green Panda™
Common Name: Clumping Bamboo
Green Panda™ Bamboo is a short, clumping Bamboo which is actually welcome in the garden because it is not a runner. Green Panda™ starts slowly as a young plant taking several years to reach its full height of 8' (the saying about Bamboo growth rates is "sleep, creep, leap"). The delicate narrow green leaves are held on slender green stalks, issuing in clump from nodes (culms) on the stems. It is semi-evergreen, but can be scorched by cold winter winds or significant drought. It was selected by Jan Oprins in Belgium and introduced to the US by Susanne Lucey of Pioneer Plants.
