Phegopteris (Thelypteris) decursive-pinnata

Japanese Beech Fern

All of the pizazz of a shade-tolerant fern with the functionality of a groundcover! Phegopteris decursive-pinnata is a lovely and overlooked fern selection that spreads non-aggressively by runners, helping to fill in any shady woodland spots without becoming overbearing. Japanese Beech Fern, as it’s commonly known, features dark green, arching, pinnate fronds with lighter green undersides and pairs of overt orange-brown sori, all which meet at a conspicuously winged rachis that is one of this fern’s identifying features. Good moisture is preferred and heavy shade is tolerated by Japanese beech fern, which allows it to thrive in wooded conditions with rich soil.
