Taxodium ascendens (syn. distichum var. imbricarium) 'Prairie Sentinel' PP3548

Pondcypress

Taxodium ascendens ‘Prairie Sentinel’ is a deciduous native species of facultative wetland species, perfect for tricky flood-prone and low-lying areas where moisture tends to collect. With its slender, upright habit, ‘Prairie Sentinel’ Pond Cypress makes a grandiose statement as a deciduous screen or at the edge of a pond or lake, with feathery, frond-like needles that pop with bronzy chestnut-red color in autumn. The deeply furrowed bark, which appears nearly two-toned, is attractive year-round and makes a beautiful textural backdrop during winter. While consistently moist soils are preferred by ‘Prairie Sentinel’ Pond Cypress, they are also tolerant of urban conditions, with their columnar habit making them ideal for space-challenged areas. Even with its columnar habit and somewhat open branching, at the height of the summer, this tree creates a haven of shade.
