Allium sphaerocephalon
Fragrant, floriferous, and flirty Allium sphaerocephalon, also known as Drumstick Allium, is an ornamental perennial bulb that boasts a sharp display of upright and nearly spherical dark magenta-purple flowerheads from June to July which give this plant its common name. Cylindrical stems with a blue-green cast emerge above strappy, grass-like foliage of similar hue, with pom-pom-esque inflorescences unraveling from a tight pink-to-green cluster to tiny fireworks of lustrous purple. Placing Drumstick Allium in the sensory or children’s gardens allows for visitors to enjoy the oniony scent when the plant is brushed up on, and its long bloom time and sheer abundance of flowers make it equally as delightful in fresh cut flower arrangements. Due to its easy growing nature, Allium sphaerocephalon makes a lovely container plant, growing easily in medium to somewhat dry soils and doing well in drought conditions, although it can just as easily be grown in sandy, rocky, or even coastal conditions. The fragrant foliage makes it unpalatable to deer and rabbits, making it a lovely natural deterrent for the sunny perennial border.
