Andropogon ternarius

Splitbeard Bluestem

Andropogon ternarius is a native warm-season bunchgrass that is as beautiful as it is ecologically functional. The striking ornamental seedheads stand at 2-4’ in height, giving slender verticality to the landscape, as well as a mixture of reds, oranges, and coppery-browns in late summer that contrast sharply against the abundant greens in the landscape. Come autumn, the summery tones take on shades of blues, purples, and reds, making Andropogon ternarius attractive throughout much of the growing season. Seedheads often persist well into early winter, which are foraged by and used as nesting materials and shelter for birds as well as native bee species. Splitbeard bluestem is tolerant of partial shade, drought, and sandy coastal conditions.
