Aster spectabilis

Showy Aster

Aster spectabilis (syn. Eurybia spectabilis) is a tough and adaptable native perennial valued for its saturated violet-blue flowers that appear from August to October above narrow, coarse green foliage. Appropriately called Showy Aster for its profuse blooming habit, this coastal perennial is wonderful for filling in spaces where it's allowed to freely creep about, often peeping up through other late season perennials. Showy Aster is particularly well suited for sandy and rocky soils, coastal conditions, dry meadows, and drought-prone pollinator plantings. This hellscape species performs reliably where many other perennials struggle. Bright yellow centers provide strong contrast against the rich purple ray flowers while attracting native bees and butterflies late in the growing season. An excellent ecological choice for coastal restoration work, dry, naturalized borders and rock gardens, and resilient full sun landscapes. Drought and salt tolerant.
