Aster umbellatus (syn. Doellingeria umbellata) is a robust North American native perennial producing expansive flattened clusters of small white flowers with yellow centers from late August into early November when many other species begin to fade. Perfunctorily known as Flat-Topped Aster for the shape of its inflorescences, Aster umbellatus is particularly attractive to native bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, this species excels in moist meadows, rain gardens, wetland edges, and large-scale naturalistic plantings prone to slowly draining soils. Upright stems and broad foliage create strong vertical structure while its adaptability to periodically wet soils makes it useful in stormwater-focused designs. An excellent ecological species for extending habitat value deep into fall.
