Carex woodii

Wood's Sedge

Finally, the sedge we’ve all been eagerly waiting for! Carex woodii, also known as Wood’s Sedge, is a highly sought-after native sedge coveted for its outstanding performance in both naturalized and garden settings. Mt. Cuba Center trials of this selection found it to be versatile in nearly every situation thrown at it. Carex woodii makes an acceptable lawn substitute after studies have shown it to create dense mats after being mown, and it can also handle some light foot traffic. As Wood’s Sedge adapts to its conditions, it is known to spread out and eventually form colonies. While its preferred woodland habitat ensures its more than happy thriving in shade, it has also proven itself to be an efficient grower even in full sun. From April into May, tannish-yellow bristlebrush-like inflorescences emerge above the fine, luscious green foliage, both adding a textural element between broader-leafed early spring perennials. Although it appears more blue-green early in the season, the finely textured foliage takes on a truer green hue as it ages, remaining semi-evergreen in mild winters and providing year-round interest in virtually any space it’s offered. And, just when you thought Carex woodii couldn’t get any better, it’s also found to be deer resistant!
