Carya ovata

Shagbark Hickory

One of the most charismatic native hardwoods of eastern North America, Carya ovata, known commonly as shagbark hickory, develops a commanding presence with age through its rugged exfoliating bark, strong branching structure, and broad canopy. Deep green, compound foliage casts moderate shade at the height of the summer before turning golden bronze in autumn. Edible shagbark hickory nuts provide an important food source for wildlife as well as humans, while the impressive stature and peeling, expressive bark offers habitat opportunities for bats, birds, and other beneficial species. Historically, the strong, durable wood has been used for furniture and tool carpentry and is excellent for smoking meats. Shagbark hickory is the host tree for various moth species, including the Luna moth and the Hickory horndevil, as well as Banded hairstreak butterflies. Deep-rooted and resilient once established, Carya ovata is best suited for parks, campuses, restoration projects, and expansive landscapes where it has room to mature naturally over time.
