Cephalotaxus fortunii

Plum Yew

A long-standing garden ornamental, Cephalotaxus fortunei is an elegant evergreen conifer prized for its deep green needle-like foliage, graceful habit, and adaptability to shaded conditions where many evergreens struggle. Unlike traditional yews, plum yew tolerates heat and humidity exceptionally well once established, making it valuable for sheltered courtyards, woodland gardens, and shaded urban foundation plantings. Known as Chinese Plum Yew, this large, openly branched shrub with its delicately weeping structure, and somewhat fernlike foliar appearance provide a unique textural richness and structure as a backdrop to smaller shrubs and perennials, without appearing rigid or overly formal. If the large, elliptical, olive-green fruits are a desirable feature, females must be planted with at least one male pollinator plant. Best grown in moist, well-drained soils and part shade protected from excessive winter wind exposure.
