Diervilla lonicera
Northern Bush-honeysuckle
If there’s anything we’ve received requests for consistently over the years, it’s Diervilla lonicera! Practically foolproof for the dry, full sun landscape, our native Northern Bush Honeysuckle is a much-desired and hard-to-find selection perfect for hedging and massing, creating a dense thicket over time. Suitable for erosion control in dry, rocky sites with poor soils, Diervilla lonicera is a drought tolerant workhorse capable of handling light conditions from full sun to shade, blooming more profusely in full sun from June to August with tubular, lemon yellow flowers that mature to attractive, reddish brown seed capsules in autumn. Bees, butterflies, and moths visit the flowers, with the Snowberry Clearwing and Laurel Sphinx moths utilizing the plant as a larval host. Medium green foliage transforms to bronzy shades of red and purple alongside the reddish fruits which are attractive to birds, making this a lovely multi-seasonal and eco-friendly point of interest from spring to fall.
