Dodecatheon meadia 'Aphrodite' PP14002
It’s not everyday that a plant inherits the moniker of a goddess, but Dodecatheon meadia ‘Aphrodite’ totally deserves it. This native woodland perennial is a selection of the species which features a nodding display of large, magenta, grape-scented blooms with reflexed petals and exposed stamens arranged into a beak-like cluster and decorated with irregular rings of white, yellow, and maroon, in the mid-spring from approximately April to May. The perplexing flowers emerge upright above a basal rosette of soft green, lance-shaped foliage that often goes summer dormant, but remains deer resistant throughout its growing season. It is the unique floral shape and appearance that gives this woodland plant its common name, ‘Aphrodite’ Shooting Star, with this selection offering taller, more pronounced blooms and larger leaves as well as a more upright growth habit than her native cousin. Dodecatheon meadia ‘Aphrodite’ prefers dappled shade and moist, rich soils, and is ideal for native woodland gardens where it can naturalize.
