Dryopteris ludoviciana

Southern Wood Fern

Dryopteris ludoviciana is the fern lover’s solution to damp, shady spaces prone to deer browsing! Known for its glossy, lobed fronds that remain semi-evergreen in mild winter climates, this native fern establishes itself as an attractive, vase-shaped, moderately spreading clump that can be used to fill out the understory of the moist woodland garden. Known commonly as the Southern Wood Fern, and with its specific epithet translating to “of Louisiana”, it’s no surprise that Dryopteris ludoviciana thrives in bayou-like conditions, although it’s been known to do just fine in average garden soils and dappled shade as well. Southern wood fern fronds can reach individual lengths of 4’, giving height and texture to the rear of the woodland garden even during periods of flooding or oversaturated soils.
