Eucomis x 'Dark Star'

Pineapple Lily

Eucomis ‘Dark Star’ is a black-leafed, dwarf cultivar of exotic Pineapple Lily, a South African perennial that thrives in full sun conditions where it will flower most prominently with an upright whorled spike of plum-purple blooms topped with modified leaves resembling tiny pineapples in August and September. The dark purple, nearly black, basal rosette from which the floral spike emerges makes a beautiful contrast to yellow goldenrods and chartreuse groundcovers, complimenting even the odd silver-leafed selection and providing visual density in summertime container plantings where it can be used as a “thriller” specimen. As the outer layers of the basal rosette age, they begin to take on a speckled appearance, dappled a lustrous green intermingled with the dark purple-black that gives this semi-tropical perennial its name. ‘Dark Star’ Pineapple Lily can tolerate some part shade so long as it has extremely well-draining soils, which also help to make it a fantastic selection for container arrangements.
