Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa'
Clumping Bamboo
One of the hardiest and most adaptable (NON-INVASIVE!!!) clumping bamboos for Northeastern landscapes, Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa' develops dense fountains of narrow deep green foliage on gently arching canes. Unlike spreading bamboo species, 'Rufa' Clumping Bamboo is well-behaved and reaches a height of only 10', making it highly useful for screening in areas that benefit from shade. In early spring, an abundance of culms emerge at the base, exposing rusty-red sheaths that give way to the dense wall of narrow green leaves that help to make this such a successful screening selection. Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa' requires afternoon shade, and will not tolerate full sun or areas prone to excess heat exposure. Its high tolerance of shade allows it to perform beautifully in woodland gardens and sheltered urban sites.
