Helianthus angustifolius
Swamp Sunflower
A popular inhabitant of coastal wetlands, roadside ditches, and just about anywhere it can sink its seeds into, Helianthus angustifolius is the perfect native perennial for giving the landscape a naturalized feel. Late in the season starting towards the end of July and blooming well into September, daisy-like yellow flowers become a beacon of nectar for buzzing bees, wasps, and other pollinators, standing between 6-8’ tall at maturity. Swamp sunflower, commonly named for its preference of boggy and damp soils, is perfect for adding texture and height to the back of the rain garden, along a moist fenceline, or as a tall summer-flowering perennial to soften up a foundation with its narrow, linear foliage. Native to much of Eastern North America, Helianthus angustifolius can be found in a variety of landscape conditions, including brackish coastline regions and occasional salt spray. Despite its love of wet soils, Swamp Sunflower is capable of tolerating periods of drought, and also shows good resistance to herbivore browse.
