Hibiscus moscheutos

Rose Mallow

Hibiscus moschuetos is a stately native woody-based perennial with large everything: large leaves, tall stature, and dinner plate-sized flowers that bloom throughout summer, beginning in July and ending in early October, varying in shades of creamy whites, pinks, and reds. The natural affinity of Hibiscus moschuetos is to inhabit boggy, wet sites along streambanks, riverbeds, and low-lying meadows, although it can happily tolerate average well-draining soils so long as it receives adequate moisture. Known commonly as Rose Mallow, and occasionally Swamp Rose Mallow for its preferred habitat, this shrubby plant gives vertical definition to the back of the perennial border, or softens pond edges, all the while attracting butterflies, bees, and even Ruby-throated hummingbirds. Our native Rose Mallow is a host plant for a variety of fauna, such as the larval forms of the Painted-Lady butterfly, the Gray Hairstreak butterfly, the Io moth, and the Pearly Wood Nymph.
