Ilex opaca 'Greenleaf'

American Holly

Ilex opaca ‘Greenleaf’ is a popular female variety of American Holly that boasts larger-than-life fruits throughout the fall and winter on an upright, pyramidal form. From April to May, small, inconspicuous white flowers appear on the branches, attractive to early pollinating bee species. Following pollination, the bright red berries, which are actually drupes, take over and contrast strikingly against the thick, spiny deep green foliage. The fruits often last late into the year, just in time to be added to festive holiday arrangements and bring a pop of color to the winter landscape. The upright, evergreen nature and natural deer resistance of ‘Greenleaf’ American Holly make it a great option for an attractive hedge year-round, while its ability to handle many different soil types as well as air pollution make it suitable for a variety of sites.
