Liatris pycnostachya

Prairie Blazing Star

A prairie pollinator powerhouse! Liatris pycnostachya is a North American native perennial found across dry prairies and meadows, known for attracting hordes of bees, butterflies, hummingbirds, wasps, moths, beetles and flies to its feathery explosions of magenta-purple flowers. Blooming from the top of the spike to the bottom above narrow, grass-like foliage, Prairie Blazing Star inflorescences remain showy and upright for weeks at a time from July to September before transforming into fluffs of seeds that are eaten by songbirds. Liatris pycnostachya can be found in sites with dry-to-medium, well-drained soils, preferring full sun locations and capable of handling periods of drought and summer humidity heat. Liatris pycnostachya, a true warrior in wayward landscapes, will happily take on poor soils and jazz up even some of the harshest environments.
