Mimulus ringens

Allegheny Monkeyflower

There’s no monkeying around with this native perennial! Mimulus ringens, known affectionately as Allegheny Monkey Flower, is a vigorous grower and underrated addition to the moist, part shade garden. Allegheny Monkey Flower will happily naturalize in wet soils, perfect for beautifying streambank or pond edges, especially where deer pressure may be high. Despite its preference for wet soils, Mimulus ringens tends to be a very adaptable species and is capable of handling heavy clay soils. A long bloom period from June to September invites specialized bees to pollinate the small flowers, which resemble tiny monkey faces if you squint hard enough. The small, primate-like blooms range from a soft lilac, to violet, to indigo, emerging in pairs and enticing not only specialized bees, but hummingbirds and butterflies, some of which utilize Mimulus ringens as a larval host.
