Parthenocissus quinquefolia var. engelmannii
You asked, we listened! Parthenocissus quinquefolia var. engelmannii, a selection of Virginia Creeper chosen for its smaller leaves and robust red fall color, is every native gardener’s dream vine. Found throughout North America with a range from Canada to Mexico, this Virginia Creeper, also occasionally called Engelmann Ivy, is a vigorous climber capable of scaling lengths of up to 50’ and can often be found creeping around as a loose groundcover. Palmate leaves gradually increase in size as they age, the newest tendrils sporting purplish new growth before maturing to green throughout the growing season. In autumn, the true show of Parthenocissus quinquefolia var. engelmannii begins – a rainbow gradient of purple, bronzy red, orange, yellow, and green cascades down the vine, making it one of the most vibrant selections in the woodland or shade garden. This particular selection is known for having smaller leaflets and a deeper bronzy red than the species, making it both a wonderful color and texture element during the heart of fall.
