Penstemon digitalis is a Mid-Atlantic native perennial that pollinators adore! White to pale lavender tubular flowers emerge on an upright panicle from May to July, occasionally reaching up to 5’ in height at maturity. The blooms of Foxglove Beardtongue may appear sporadically through the summer, while the dark green basal foliage with hints of bronzy purple remains attractive and largely without any disease or pest issues throughout the growing season. Butterflies, hummingbirds, and many bee species are known to visit the flowers, making it a lovely addition to the pollinator garden with well-drained, loamy soil, although Foxglove Beardtongue is also known to be drought tolerant once established. Come autumn, interesting seed capsules replace the flowers, which add delightful winter interest if left to persist in the garden, or can be added to seasonal arrangements as a textural filler.
