Pycnanthemum incanum
A native mint family member and pollinator haven, Pycnanthemum incanum is the ecologist’s or nature enthusiast’s dream plant. Fragrant from top to bottom, tiny whitish-purple flower clusters bloom from July to September above soft gray-green foliage. The flowers are beloved by many insect pollinators, including butterflies, bees, and beneficial wasps. The long bloom time paired with Pycnanthemum incanum’s ability to naturalize quickly makes it a fantastic selection for the native pollinator garden where it can freely spread. Its quick growth habit and ability to naturalize freely in dry, rocky soils make it a wonderful option for erosion control. Known commonly as Hoary Mountain Mint, this native perennial can actually be found typically growing around woodland clearings, meadows, and grasslands of Eastern North America where soils are well-drained and occasionally experience periods of drought. The minty foliage can be harvested to add flavor to teas, although the aroma that is attractive to humans is a deterrent to deer - a perfect addition to naturalized areas with high deer pressure!
