Rhynchospora colorata

Starrush Whitetop Sedge

Perhaps one of the most intriguing selections available at the nursery, Rhynchospora colorata is an unexpected and underutilized wet-site sedge with as much ecological functionality as aesthetic appeal! Attractive, bright white, star-shaped inflorescences with sharp green tips appear over a long bloom-time from late May to September, inviting enthusiastic solitary bees and butterflies to delight in the nectar all season long. Unlike other wind-pollinated sedge family members, starrush whitetop relies on the visitation of insects for pollination. Perfect for including in the rain garden or wetland site, Rhynchospora colorata is best grown in heavy or poorly drained soils, including alkaline-leaning clay soils, and can handle occasionally over-saturated soils.
