Silene virginica

Fire Pink

Watch out, Cardinal Flower, there’s a new red-blooming native on the rise! Silene virginica, a humble, clump-forming perennial that typically gets no higher than 18” at maturity, is a criminally underutilized and rare North American native found along rocky slopes and open woodlands from New York to Oklahoma. From mid-April to June, conspicuous, scarlet red flowers emerge, emblazoning the slender green foliage beneath them and setting ablaze the dry, part shade garden. It’s not called Fire Pink for nothing! Relatively uncommon in the trade, Silene virginica is a wonderfully unexpected specimen for dry woodland and rock gardens, and its fiery red flowers are beloved by hummingbirds.
