Spiraea alba
Imitated but never duplicated! Spiraea alba, our native Meadowsweet, is a native deciduous shrub that prefers low-lying ditches and meadows throughout eastern North America, giving it part of its common name. Spiraea alba is highly tolerant of moist to wet soils and easily handles standing water, making it ideal for a spectrum of projects, from naturalized waterside gardens to bioremediation in boggy or swampy regions. The dense, showy clusters of white flowers are a huge draw for pollinating insects throughout its long bloom period from June to late August. Despite the flowers being a favorite of pollinators, and the resulting seed capsules being enjoyed by overwintering bird species, deer tend not to browse this shrub. Spiraea alba can be used as an effective deciduous hedge in areas with consistently wet soils, or used to give a natural feel to cottage or cut flower gardens so long as it receives adequate moisture.
