Spiraea latifolia
A favorite of restoration landscapers throughout the Mid-Atlantic, Spiraea latifolia is a deciduous flowering shrub that prefers moist, sunny sites, naturalizing easily and creating a suckering, spreading habit ideal for sheltering small mammals, birds and insects. Panicles of white to occasionally pink blooms appear from June to September above arching stems of rich green foliage. The abundant inflorescences become a haven of pollinators throughout the summer, while the eventual resulting seeds are consumed by birds during late fall and winter. White Meadowsweet is the larval host plant for the Spring and Summer Azure Butterflies, who have plenty of opportunities to appreciate the shiny green foliage due to its deer resistance. Come autumn, the shrub enshrouds itself in shades of gold, giving a bright seasonal backdrop to the remaining brownish seed capsules.
