Tiarella cordifolia

Foamflower

A North American native groundcover with all the bells and whistles! Tiarella cordifolia is a low-growing, semi-evergreen workhorse that creates a dense mat of soft green, maple-leaf shaped foliage that takes on a bronzy hue in the autumn. From April to June, fluffy, airy flower spikes adorned in pink-to-white tones that give this perennial it’s common name, Foamflower, rise above the foliage, inviting early pollinators to delight in the native nectar. Known for proliferating in heavy shade, Tiarella cordifolia makes a suitable groundcover for the woodland garden, providing seasonal interest throughout the year. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also moderately deer resistant due to its astringent foliage! Its outstanding garden performance and overall appearance have helped our native Foamflower to achieve the NC Wildflower of the Year Award in 1986, as well as the Georgia Native Plant Society’s Plant of the Year Award in 2003.
