Liatris spicata

Gayfeather

Pollinator magnet and an ecologically valuable resource for wildlife! Liatris spicata, a Mid-Atlantic native perennial, is as gorgeous as it is hearty in the landscape. Vertical spikes of dense, feathery purple flowers appear in midsummer atop deep green basal foliage, from July to August, and are a favorite nectar source for various butterflies, bees, and even hummingbirds. Known commonly as Blazing Star for its tiny star-shaped flowers, Liatris spicata is the perfect solution for brightening up the rain garden, cut flower garden, native perennial border, or any full sun spot that tends to retain some soil moisture. Following the summertime bloom period, fluffy seedheads persist on the plant and may be visited by foraging songbirds. Blazing Star is a larval host for the Liatris Flower Moth as well as the Liatris Borer Moth.
