Crataegus laevigata 'Crimson Cloud'

Hawthorn

Calling all Hawthorn fanatics! A 1966 introduction by Princeton Nursery that has held up through the test of time, Crataegus laevigata ‘Crimson Cloud’ boasts abundant clusters of hot-reddish-pink petals with white star-shaped centers that cover the tree in mid-May for several weeks and are a magnet for bees. The profuse flower clusters blanket the thornless branches in a cloud of blooms, giving the aptly named ‘Crimson Cloud’ Hawthorn its name. In mid-to-late summer, glossy red fruits approximately half an inch in diameter take the place of the flowers, offering a bright contrast against the shiny green, lobed foliage of the growing season. This particular selection is known for being resistant to many common pests and diseases of Hawthorn, and its adaptability, toughness, and ability to handle adverse soil conditions make it a prime candidate to be a street or urban tree, and useful for planting under powerlines along sidewalks.
