Caltha palustris
An unsung perennial hero of the native plant world! Caltha palustris is an herbaceous wetland species best grown in rich woodland, boggy, or moist soils where it will spread by underground rhizomes to create a dense patch of heart-shaped, medium green foliage with scalloped edges that erupts in yellow blooms come early spring. From April to June, five-petalled flowers reminiscent of buttercups emerge to attract early pollinators, specifically hoverflies. Its toxic foliage makes it unpalatable to herbivores, allowing it to flourish in its natural woodland habitat as well as in the cultivated landscape. Known commonly as Marsh Marigold for its swampy preference and bright yellow blooms, this low-growing, spreading perennial is often one of the first to bloom in the understory in spring.
