Amsonia tabernaemontana var. salicifolia
Bluestar
Well-behaved and tidy, Amsonia tabernaemontana var. salicifolia is a densely compact and lush herbaceous perennial with a shrub-like vase-shape that features multiple seasons of interest. Icy blue, star-shaped flowers that set this genus apart appear in terminal clusters from mid-May to early June, attracting springtime pollinators such as various bee, butterfly and hummingbird moth species. Known commonly for its foliage resembling that of a Salix genus member and its bright, light blue, star-shape flowers, Willow Leaf Bluestar prefers well-drained, average soils, but is tolerant of some heavier clay especially if situated in full sun, or drier, occasionally drought-prone soils if situated in partial shade. Unpalatable sap within the stems and foliage keeps deer and rabbits away, and its ability to handle bright, indirect sunlight and part shade areas make it a wonderful option for woodland edges where other herbaceous species may be grazed to bits. Come autumn, the foliage turns a bright, lemon yellow, often mixed with hints of red and orange.
