Cerastium tomentosum
Snow-in-Summer
Cerastium tomentosum is an evergreen mat-forming perennial that is perfect for softening up rock gardens, borders and containers, its naturally cascading habit and floriferous nature making it appear as though it were a blanket of snow during late spring and early summer. Commonly called Snow-in-Summer because of its dense patches of white, five-petaled blooms over frosty blue foliage, this trailing perennial hails from Italy and thrives in sandy, well-drained soils and tolerates periods of drought. Lightly covered in soft, whitish hairs, the silvery-blue linear foliage resembles a low-growing lavender when the plant isn’t in bloom, and is uninteresting to deer. In mild winter climates, the foliage remains evergreen and persists into the following spring and early summer while the blooms are beginning to appear. Bees enjoy visiting the flowers and can be found buzzing about the snowy mat throughout its blooming season, typically occurring around June.
