Deschampsia cespitosa 'Northern Lights'

Tussock Grass

Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Northern Lights’ is a beautiful, clumping semi-evergreen cool season grass with more than just a touch of color! Variegated green, gold and white blades emerge with a rosy pink tone in spring that fades to creamy white and then returns to a blushed appearance in the cool autumn weather. Upright panicles of dusty purple, beige, and silvery plume-like inflorescences appear in summer, giving this plant its common name, tufted hair grass. These seedheads are ideal for creating a dramatic silhouette and adding a soft ornamentality to the garden, and are often eaten by songbirds well into fall and early winter. ‘Northern Lights’ tufted hair grass is a low maintenance selection that tolerates shade and acts as a lovely filler in both the landscape as well as container plantings.
