Magnolia acuminata
A native tree with a tropical twist, Magnolia acuminata, also known as Cucumber Tree, Cucumber Magnolia, and Yellow Cucumbertree, is a large-leafed, rapidly growing, deciduous shade tree typically found in moist woodlands across the mountainous eastern portion of North America. Many natural populations of Magnolia acuminata are located on rocky Appalachian slopes of varying grades, providing magnificent shade cover to the understory below with their massive leaves that can individually reach 10” in length. In spring, from mid-April to June, mildly fragrant, tulip-like yellow flowers appear at the terminal ends of branches, transforming to become cucumber-like fruits once pollinated. The lumpy green seedcones mature throughout the season, splitting open to reveal shiny red seeds that are eaten by birds and other wildlife. Alongside the namesake seedcones, the large, exotic-looking leaves of Cucumber Tree produce a golden yellow fall color that beautifully contrasts against the mature red fruits.
