Rhododendron 'Stewartstonian'
With flowers so bright they’re like a live flame, Rhododendron ‘Stewartstonian’ is unlike nearly any other evergreen Azalea in cultivation. Introduced by Pennsylvanian horticulturist Joseph Gable in his hometown of Stewartstown, this broadleaf evergreen shrub is a selection chosen for not only its excellent garden performance, but its profusion of bright orange-red flowers that enshroud the plant in mid-to-late April, and its dense but tidy habit. The large clusters of fiery flowers attract early-arriving hummingbirds. In winter, the evergreen foliage becomes bronzed with reddish-chocolate shades, adding colorful interest to the landscape, before greening up again following the arrival of warm weather and longer daylight hours. The evergreen foliage and floriferous display make Rhododendron ‘Stewartstonian’ an excellent choice for flowering hedges, and its pest and disease resistance promise it’ll stay lookin’ pretty for years to come.
