Sanguisorba x 'Plum Drops' PP36497
Burnet
Completely underutilized in North American landscapes, Sanguisorba ‘Plum Drops’ is an intriguing ornamental perennial that’s suitable for almost any average garden. Like miniature, plum-purple cattails, the inflorescences sway gracefully above ornately pinnate, deep green foliage and wiry stems, raising eyebrows of passersby from late July into early September. Sporadic autumn blooms often make a surprise appearance, especially if the spent flowerheads are removed. Wonderful for adding unexpected color to the often lackluster landscape at the height of summer’s dog days, Sanguisorba ‘Plum Drops’ makes a beautiful and intermediately sized specimen perfect for the cottage or perennial garden where its long-blooming flowers can be harvested for fresh cut arrangements. Like wandflower (Gaura sp.), Sanguisorba ‘Plum Drops’ appears as a spindly upright spike of flowers, making for quite the display of see-through stems and curious flowerheads when planted en masse. Aside from its candylike inflorescences, ‘Plum Drops’ Burnet was chosen for its lush, deep green foliage, which deviates from the much lighter green foliage of the species, as well as for its larger, taller habit than its parent.
