Thalictrum thalictroides
Rue-anemone
Native plant collectors of mesic uplands would be wont to miss out on Anemonella thalictroides, an ephemeral perennial native to mature Eastern and Mid-Atlantic woodlands. The scientific name of this early springtime wildflower quite accurately describes its appearance: its small flowers resemble Anemone flowers, usually blooming either white or light pink from late March to early May, while the compound foliage looks similar to Thalictrum species with its blunt triple lobed leaflets. No need to fear when Anemonella thalictroides begin to disappear in the hotter months: the foliage goes dormant in summer, and will benefit from heavier shade in warmer climates. Preferring at least dappled shade but tolerant of heavy shade, Rue Anemone is perfect for adding to well-draining woodland gardens or dry shade gardens. In shaded conditions, Rue Anemone is somewhat drought tolerant, and can be used to help beautify slopes and wooded pathways.
