Thermopsis villosa

Carolina Lupine

Thermopsis villosa is a native leguminous perennial with upright spires of sulphur yellow, pea-shaped flowers resembling the striking inflorescences of ornamental lupines. In fact, it is for this reason that it has acquired its common name, the Carolina Lupine. It’s sometimes called the Blue Ridge False Lupine, referring to its natural Appalachian habitat, where it is typically found within woodland openings and meadows. The tall and impressive flower spikes make great additions to fresh cut flower arrangements, and glow like beacons above the bluish-green foliage in June, drawing in bee species like moths to a flame. Due to the presence of symbiotic bacteria within the below-ground nodules characteristic of pea-family members, Thermopsis villosa is suitable for use in urban environments with poor or compacted soils and may help to reclaim soil nutrients. It’s reliably tough and can even tolerate drought conditions in dry to average soils.
