Tradescantia ohiensis
Found throughout North America, Tradescentia ohiensis is a native, clump-forming perennial utilized and beloved by many endemic bee species for its multi-seasonal purple blooms. Opening in the morning and closing with the heat of the day, Tradescentia ohiensis flowers appear above strappy, grass-like blue-green foliage in three-petaled flower clusters ranging from indigo to magenta. They don’t just bloom during summer, though - multi-seasonal blooms begin popping out in late March with the arrival of longer daylight hours, with final sporadic blooms ending their show towards mid-September. Known commonly as Ohio Spiderwort, the range of this easily grown perennial extends from as far south as Texas to as far north as Maine, preferring moist, well-draining soils but growing easily in sandy or clay soils as well. Tradescantia ohiensis naturalizes well in damp meadows and prairies, and makes a lovely addition to the spacious perennial garden where it will be appreciated by pollinators.
