Tradescantia virginiana
A plant as versatile as Tradescentia virginiana should be treasured by even the most fickle of plantspeople – its ability to grow in virtually any condition makes it an irreplaceable asset in the North American garden. From moist woodland soils to rocky, sandy, and clay soils, Common Spiderwort grows happily and blooms consistently from March to July with a second bloom appearing in autumn to cap off the season. Although the three-petaled flowers, which are usually purplish in color but range from blue to pink with bright yellow stamens, only last for a single day before giving way to a fresh flush of blooms, they appear throughout the growing season and provide resources to various pollinators. Tolerant of black walnut juglone, heavy shade, dry and wet soils, Tradescantia virginiana is perfect for the rain or woodland gardens, part shade native perennial gardens, and naturalized moist meadows.
