Vernonia noveboracensis 'White Lightning'

New York Ironweed

‘White Lightning’, go, ‘White Lightning’! Okay, so maybe John Travolta wasn’t singing about this white-flowering New York Ironweed in 1970’s cinematic hit Grease, but he should have been!!! This unique, bright-white flowering selection of our native wet meadow species, Vernonia novaboracensis ‘White Lightning’, is like a spark of electricity in the landscape. The fluffy flowers begin to appear late in the season, typically mid-August, and continue to draw curious pollinators well into October. Growing shorter than its purple-flowering counterpart and reaching only about 4’ at the height of its growing season, ‘White Lightning’ New York Ironweed is well-suited for the smaller rain garden or native garden with average to consistently moist soils, where it will perform quite well as an unexpected summer specimen.
