Boltonia asteroides
Tired of looking at that dreary old patch of swamp doing nothing? No need to fret, Boltonia asteroides is ready to kick some serious riparian rump! This tough native perennial, named for its quarter-sized, daisy-like flowers, is absolutely inundated with blooms from late August to the first true frosts of the cold months, sometimes well into November. A fantastic source of nectar and pollen for late season pollinators, the classic daisy-white ray flowers of False Aster can occasionally be seen sporting shades of violet and soft pink. Capable of spreading up to a whopping 6’ and growing sometimes as tall as 5’, especially in consistently moist soils or occasionally waterlogged low sites, Boltonia asteroides makes a powerful statement if allowed to naturalize in the rain or wetland garden. Although its flowers attract a variety of pollinators and its seeds are a beneficial source of nutrients for birds, Boltonia asteroides is deer resistant, remaining beautiful in the landscape during a time when hungry deer are on the prowl.
