Solidago flexicaulis

Zigzag Goldenrod

A must-have for all native pollinator gardens, Solidago flexicaulis is a dry upland perennial native to most of North America to the East of the Rockies. Tiny, golden yellow flowers of this Zigzag Goldenrod, which commonly get this genus confused with allergy-inducing ragweed, appear in late summer from mid-August to early October, emerging between leaf axils on somewhat “zigzag” stems that give this plant its common name. Solidago flexicaulis is a notable inhabitant of dry woodland edges and forest clearings, growing best in dappled partial shade with well-drained soils. Zigzag Goldenrod gives unexpected late season color to the naturalized shade garden, mingling perfectly with the soft whites and blues of our native Wood Asters and providing a nectar source for various pollinator species well into mid-autumn.
