Solidago nemoralis

Gray Goldenrod

A plant of many common names, Solidago nemoralis is a rhizomatous native perennial that grows easily in average, full sun conditions. Often referred to as Gray Goldenrod, Old Field Goldenrod, and sometimes even simply Common Goldenrod, this hardy indigenous species is the standard for all native Goldenrods, complete with all of the characteristics that give an idealistic visual representation of the genus itself. Upright panicles of individual, fragrant, golden yellow flowers bloom throughout late summer and well into fall, usually from August to November. As they age, blooms gently droop over tops of the slightly hairy, soft green foliage. Although Solidago nemoralis prefers well-drained, occasionally dry soils, it’s quite tolerant of various soil conditions, including clay and shallow, rocky sites, and is known for naturalizing very easily to create a matrix of yellow blooms in native cottage of perennial gardens. As with most Goldenrods, its bitter foliage makes it unpalatable to deer, and combined with its low-maintenance growth habit, Solidago nemoralis is sure to become a prominent fall feature anywhere it’s allowed to pop up!
