Pinus mugo
With its specific epithet meaning literally “small mountain pine”, Pinus mugo is the perfect dwarf pine that is widely suited to a variety of landscape conditions, including urban environments prone to road salt and pollution, as well as foundation plantings and areas that tend to experience drought or have somewhat poor soils. The broad, wide needles and rounded, bushy-looking habit tend to visually differentiate Mugo Pine from its cousins, making it a lovely feature specimen when situated in a Japanese rock garden or along a patio or carefully placed around the walkway surrounding a pond.
