Hakone Grass

Hakonechloa macra

Hakone Grass has graceful green foliage, like miniature bamboo. Soft, airy seedheads form in late summer. Fall and winter foliage color is tan. The tallest of the Hakonechloas, Andrew Bunting of the Chicago Botanic Garden describes it beautifully as "catching (the) wind and flow(ing) like a rolling wave."

Gold Hakone Grass

Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold'

The bright yellow spiky foliage of Gold Hakone Grass is more upright than H. 'Aureola'. This grass really lights up shady spots, especially when covered with delicate seedheads. This is Bruce Crawford's favorite Hakonechloa for a number of its attributes. Fall and winter color is tan.

Golden-Variegated Hakone Grass

Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola'

The striking yellow and green foliage of Golden-Variegated Hakone Grass helps make this and 'All Gold' our absolute favorite shade grass. Tan color in fall and winter is preceded by delicate, feathery seed panicles. A 2009 Perennial Plant of the Year, and a slow-spreading groundcover.

Carolina Silverbell

Halesia carolina 'Jersey Belle'

'Jersey Belle' Carolina Silverbell has very large white bell-shaped flowers that hang thickly under the branches in May. Foliage turns an attractive yellow in fall and the bark adds winter interest with its contrasting striations. Halesia carolina (formerly tetraptera) 'Jersey Belle' was named and introduced by Princeton Nurseries.

Carolina Silverbell

Halesia carolina 'U.Conn. Wedding Bells'

'U.Conn. Wedding Bells' Carolina Silverbell has white bell-shaped flowers that are significantly larger and more numerous than those of the species. The yellow fall color and interesting striated bark add multi-season interest to this charming native tree. The plant was spotted in Ohio by Mark Brand and introduced through the University of Connecticut.

Two-winged Silverbell

Halesia diptera var. magniflora

Two-wing Silverbell is a lovely native tree that is covered with white bell-like flowers in early spring. When the flowers drop, they carpet the ground under Halesia diptera var. magniflora with a white blanket. The blooms are followed by pendulous green two-winged fruit which turn tan in fall. The fruit persist into winter, and add an interesting element as they are moved by breezes.

Chinese Witchhazel

Hamamelis mollis 'Sweet Sunshine'

'Sweet Sunshine' Chinese Witchhazel blooms profusely in February and March, with large lemon yellow fragrant flowers on last year's growth. The base of the flower is red, adding to the subtle appeal. The fall foliage color is yellow. The Chinese Witchhazels are generally the most fragrant of all the Hamamelis species.

'Amethyst' Vernal Witchhazel has fragrant lavender-purple flowers appearing in late winter and early spring, followed by coppery new growth. Good orange and yellow fall color. Hamamelis vernalis 'Amethyst' is also salt and wet site tolerant. Great as a cut branch in the house for a spring "pick-me-up". Found by Tim Brotzman of Ohio and named by Don Shadow.

Lemon yellow fall flowers make a beautiful display on 'Harvest Moon' Common Witchhazel. New growth is coppery, turning to green in summer. Hamamelis virginiana 'Harvest Moon' is a heavy and very fragrant bloomer, found by Dick Jaynes of Broken Arrow Nursery in Connecticut. It is also salt tolerant.
